How to plan a week of Darjeeling-Gangtok trip

Gangtok zero point

We just returned back from our week long Gangtok-Darjeeling trip. we managed to make it in 9k per head ( 3 people) as per our budget and itinerary.

here was our itinerary. hope it helps 🙂

5th Dec – NJP to Gangtok ( leave early in the morning till 7 to reach there by 12 Noon, after checking in to hotel and Lunch, leave for local sight seeing, 7 point )

6th Dec – Gangtok to Lachung ( left Gangtok in the morning around 8 AM for Lachung , we reached there by evening by doing sight seeing in between journey and lunch )

7th Dec – Lachung – Yumthang valley – Zero point ( Left hotel early on 7th and covered Yumthang valley and zero point till 2 PM. After Lunch at Lachung we headed back to Gangtok and reached there by 8 PM)

8th Dec – Nathu La – Baba Mandir – Changu Lake ( left Gangtok around 8 AM for Natula and covered all there till 2 PM and returned back to Gangtok till 3:30 PM. Left for Darjeeling at 4PM and reached there by 8 PM)

9th Dec – Tiger Hill, 5 point site seeing ( left at 5AM for Tiger Hill to witness spectacular event of Kanchenjunga peak shining with first ray of sun, after that we covered local site seeing of Darjeeling during day time)

10th Dec – return back to NJP to catch train of respective place.

  1. Shared Taxi journey ( NJP to Gangtok, Gangtok to Lachung-Yumthang-Zero Point -Gangtok, Gangtok-Nathula-Baba mandir-Changu lake-Gangtok, Darjeeling-NJP)
  2. Reserved Taxi journey ( Gangtok local site seeing, Darjeeling local sight seeing and Tiger Hill, Gangtok to Darjeeling)

We Stayed in Budget hotel standard room as we needed that as a place for comfortable sleep. Even if you go for deluxe it will hardly affect 1–1.5k hotel expense up per person in your budget.

Weather was good and temperature was around 12 degree at Gangtok where as at Lachung it was 5–6 degree. At Darjeeling weather was also good temp around 15 degree.

You can witness snow at Zero point and around Changu lake as well. Snowfall would be around Dec last or Jan.

For passes better contact your hotel/Travel agent in advance. This is must for Nathula and Yumthang and zero point.

Since you have enough travel budget so I would suggest to use reserved taxi in most of the cases this will enhance your fun and you can plan intermediate stoppage as well.

Have a awesome journey.
